This historical fort is among the most famous of Delhi’s monuments. Standing tall to this day, the Red Fort is considered an architectural marvel of medieval India. The fort is named after the massive red sandstones used in its construction, with walls that can rise up to 33 metres. The fort complex houses famous palaces and halls that find mention in the history books, including Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khass, Rang Mahal, Mumtaz Mahal, Khwabgah and Moti Masjid.

A tower of victory, constructed in 1193 AD by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, and named after him. Qutub Minar is 14.32 metres in diameter at its widest and only 2.75 metres at the narrowest point. The Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque stands at the foot of the tower. The mosque is said to be the first mosque in India. The Iron Pillar and a second unfinished tower are also located inside the Qutub complex.

Considered the site of Indraprastha, the capital city of Pandavas in the Epic of Mahabharata, the Purana Qila was developed in its current form by Sher Shah Suri (1538-45) after defeating Humayun. The Shah was an Afghan Warlord and King. The name literally translates into Old Fort and sits atop a small hill along the banks of river Yamuna.

The tomb is considered as the first example of Persian double-dome architecture in India. It is also considered as a turning point for the building and design of Mughal mausoleums. Humayun’s tomb is primarily built from red sandstone along with a combination of white and black marble. The tomb is surrounded by the Charbagh garden featuring magnificent causeways and water channels with fountains. The tomb is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Lotus Temple in Delhi is the most recent of the seven temples dedicated to the Bahá’í faith. It is shaped like a lotus flower and looks quite splendid when fully lit up in the evenings. Work on the temple was completed in 1986, and since then, the Lotus temple has remained a major tourist and spiritual centre in Delhi.

Originally known as the Yantra Mandir, the Jantar Mantar is an observatory featuring astronomical instruments of its time. The observatory was built by Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur in the year 1724. It is a prime example of Indian advancement in the fields of mathematics and astronomy at that time and remains a popular tourist destination in New Delhi.
