The place of residence of the President of India, the Rashtrapati Bhawan is a sprawling acropolis housing 350 magnificent rooms, a splendorous Durbar Hall and numerous walkways and gardens. The ceremonial hall is used for official events and functions hosted by the president. Parts of the Rashtrapati Bhawan are open for public viewing.

Located South West of the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid is a historical landmark displaying Mughal architecture at its pinnacle. The masjid itself sits atop a natural elevation, offering views of the old city and modern skyline of New Delhi from its Southern minaret. The Eastern gateway of the Jama Masjid is surrounded by a cluster of shops, a typical Indian Bazaar.

One of the most renowned landmarks of Delhi, the tomb was built between 1754-1754 AD and is last of the enclosed garden tombs in Delhi. The tomb houses several smaller pavilions, Jangli Mahal, Moti Mahal and Badshah Pasand. The main gateway of the tomb also houses a historical library maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Built in 1932 by Edwin Lutyens, India Gate is a free-standing arch dedicated to the 90,000 soldiers of British Indian Army who laid down their lives in World War I. The names of the fallen soldiers are inscribed on the walls of India Gate. The Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame commemorating the sacrifice is lit below the arch.

The most famous of Delhi’s monuments, the Red Fort is an architectural marvel of medieval India. The fort gets its name from the massive red sandstone walls that rise up to 33 metres and acted as primary defence of the city at one time. There are numerous palaces and halls inside the fort which were used by the Mughal Emperors. Notable places inside the Red Fort include Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khass, Rang Mahal, Mumtaz Mahal, Khwabgah and Moti Masjid.

Built in 1193 AD by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, the Qutub Minar is a tower of victory. The tower is 14.32 metres in diameter at the base and only 2.75 metres at the top. At the foot of the tower stands the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, the first ever mosque to be built in India. The Qutub Minar Complex also houses other marvels like the Iron Pillar and a second unfinished tower.

Literally the Old Fort, the Purana Qila stands on a small hill by the banks of Yamuna. The site was developed by Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri between 1538 and 1545 AD, after he defeated the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Purana Qila is believed to be the ancient site of Indraprastha, the legendary city mentioned in the Epic of Mahabharata.

The landmark is a turning point in the design of Mughal mausoleums in India. Built using red sandstone and a combination of white and black marble, Humayun’s Tomb is the first building in India to use the Persian double-dome concept. The double-storeyed gateway leading to the tomb and Charbagh gardens divided by causeways and water channels speak for the magnificence of this historical structure. The tomb is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Shaped like a lotus flower, the Lotus Temple was completed in 1986. The temple is the seventh and latest Bahá’í temple in the world. The temple embodies the spiritual beliefs and practices of the Bahá’í faith and looks spectacular when fully lit up at dusk. Over the years it has become a convergence point for people of myriad religions and a tourism hotspot in New Delhi.

Built by Sawai Jai Singh in 1724, the Jantar Mantar is a prime example of Indian advances in astronomy at the time. The observatory was originally known as Yantra Mandir – the temple of instruments. It is a major tourist attraction in Delhi and a sister site of the same name in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.
